EvoMove demo

Here’s a video from the EvoEvo project meeting I was at last week in Utrecht.

This is a demo of the prototype EvoMove.  Jonas has movement sensors on his hands.  An evolutionary algorithm is taking in the sensor data, clustering it, and using the clusters to produce music.  Jonas’ original moves make the clusters, then he moves to reproduce and reinforce the sounds he likes, and not the sounds he doesn’t.  The final version will allow a sensor-wearing dancer to interact with, control, and adapt to, the music.

Newnham corridor

Newnham has the second longest continuous indoor corridor in Europe. I walked the length of this corridor many times, many many years ago.  Happy days.

What surprises me from this video is that, although there have been a lot of changes since my time (particularly around the central Clough/Buttery/Library/Sidgwick area [oh, and the ability to make and distribute videos...]), I still recognise a lot of it (including the Fawcett and Strachey fire doors...)

visualising algorithms through dance

I'm nowhere near the first to post about this, but I have to advertise this. It is a wonderful set of folk dances, from AlgoRythmics, performed by a dance troupe in association with Sapientia University, Romania, that animate six different sorting algorithms. Sheer genius.

They have produced YouTube videos showing: bubble-sort via Hungarian folk dance, insert sort via Romanian folk dance, select sort via Gypsy folk dance, shell sort via another Hungarian folk dance, merge sort via German folk dance, and, almost unbelievably, quick sort with yet another Hungarian Folk dance (using hats as index pointers!)
