A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds

I am off to the Artificial Life conference in Kyoto soon; I am filling in some online forms to save time in person later.  As is often the case, such forms want date of birth.  I am bemused by the day-of-month dropdown menu.

417 Expectation Failed

We flew in to Belfast this evening, ready for the Eastercon starting tomorrow.

We laughed in nerd as we walked along the hotel corridor to our room.

First of all, a room Not Found.

Then our room, URI Too Long.

And the last room on the corridor, Expectation Failed.

Unfortunately, no more rooms, so no teapots.

I could care more

I was reading an article the other day that branched off into a discussion about the expressions I couldn't care less (obviously correct) and I could care less (obviously bizarre).  A comment pointed me to the Merriam-Webster discussion.  This is all quite fair-minded, but I definitely rofl'd at the last sentence:

if you can’t get past some people continuing to use could care less, and the fact that there’s nothing you can do about it, you may console yourself with the notion that at least they are not saying “I could care fewer.”

Random use of candles

I've blogged about variants of Total Eclipse of the Heart before, from Total Eclipse of the Flowchart, and of the Lego, of the lockdown, and even of a slash/Spirk video.

I like the original song, but the original video is definitely ... weird.  Recently, there was a BoingBoing piece suggesting that the song is actually about vampires (making it even more SFnal-resonant!)  And one of the comments points to a description of that video, set to a rather familiar tune.  Enjoy:

Covid-19 diary: puns galore

We should all remember the name of the first person to get a Covid vaccination (except those in clinical trials): it was 90-year old Margaret Keenan.

We all will remember the name of the second person: it was 81-year old William Shakespeare.

And this, of course, led to so many puns.  My favourite has to be:

So, if Ms Keenan was patient 1A, was Mr Shakespeare “Patient 2B or not 2B”?

Schrödinger's cat caught in the act

The snow captures the very moment that the cat splits in two:

but presumably not with Gaul

For those of you who don’t know, the bloke in the picture is Jacob Rees-Mogg MP, Brexiteer, and a potential contender for Leader of the Conservative party (and hence, Prime Minister).

Yes, really.

(For those in further doubt, the picture is real, but the quote is Private Eye’s.)

a titanic error

My first thought was “penguins aren’t from the northern hemisphere”.

Then I read the hover text.

Then I laughed.

predictive biography

Apparently, typing “I was born” into a predictive text system, and then letting it write the rest of your life is a thing.  So I tried it in Gmail on my phone:
I was born in the future of Dr Who changed so much more like a football match and the fist to three months in a bubble of people needed to maintain knowledge ...
It starts off very plausibly, and the Dr Who bit I can understand.  The football match, less so.

train mondegreen

Announcement on the train the other morning: “This is your 9.17 Cross Country service to...”

The word “nine” was pronounced something like “noyn”

So I heard it as “this is your annoyin’ 17 Cross Country service to ...”

down the rabbit hole that is Google

I was reading an article on mitochondria, and it mentioned HIIT could boost their energy output.

I didn’t know what HIIT was, so I googled it: High-Intensity Interval Training.  It mentioned burpees.

I didn’t know what a burpee was (and the picture didn’t really help), so I googled it: How to do a burpee (video): it’s a combination of a squat thrust (I had to google that, too), a pushup, and a jump.

Google furthermore let me find a better graphic:

More like, how to do a burpee

The HIIT page says: Do as many burpees as possible in 20 seconds.

So, that would be zero, then?  Sounds do-able.  Not sure how it helps the mitochondria, though.

OCR tastes sour

Fun OCR error: the text said “demons hide in words”; the OCR said “(lemons hide in words”.

When life gives you lemons, make literature?

Another weird Amazon recommendation.

Maybe I could sharpen the blades on the large stones I seem to have purchased?
