a day at the beach

It's Sunday, so we went to the beach.  Not the seaside, but rather a lakeside.  Sauguck Dunes State Park on the shore of Lake Michigan, to be exact.  We took something to eat, and sat looking at the lake for a while: it was very peaceful.

Despite the overcast sky, I still managed to get sunburned!

The walk from the carpark to the beach was through woodland.  This looked like any ordinary woodland, except the path underfoot was sand.  This wood was growing on the dunes.

view from another hotel window

I had a great time at the GPTP workshop, with some fascinating presentations, and interesting conversations.  I learned several new things: well worth the trip.

But to make the trip even more worthwhile, I'm going to visit some colleagues at Michigan State University next week, so I've moved hotel, to East Lansing.  The view is a little less appealing.

Having unpacked, and photographed the view, I'm off to dinner with some colleagues...

I'm in Ann Arbor for GPTP workshop (Genetic Programming Theory & Practice), which starts tomorrow at the University of Michigan.  I flew from Heathrow to Detroit, a 7 hour flight, which I am definitely not used to any more!

Checked into the hotel, unpacked, photographed the view, and am now off to the Jolly Pumpkin to meet some of my colleagues for dinner.

view from a hotel window

I flew into Dublin this evening, for a meeting at TCD tomorrow: it’s for our new joint research project between computer science, physics, and microbiology, on DNA supercoiling.  Watch this space!

The view isn’t particularly scenic, but the weather this evening is very nice.

Amusingly, I discovered that the hotel I'm staying in is literally next door to the one we stayed in for the Worldcon in 2019.  However, this one is very electronic: lots of mysterious black touch panels.  I’m not entirely sure how the lights work:

Once I figure out how to turn them on or off, I’m off for dinner with my colleagues.

view from a hotel window

We arrived at the Radisson Hotel near Heathrow mid-day yesterday, ready for our first in-person Eastercon since 2019.  The hotel seems to have forgotten how to hotel, as the check-in queue was infinitely long and infinitely slow.  But it has been great meeting old friends, having fun conversations, and going to interesting panels and talks.

And this morning we can see what's outside our room (having only managed to check in after dark yesterday):

Now, off to breakfast!
