The volume by Lanczos on variational principles is quite good, and rewards the reader with physical insights, though it takes quite a bit of delving to reach them. Just as good, and considerably more accessible, is "The Lazy Universe" by Jennifer Coopersmith, which by the author's own account is inspired by Lanczos. Her writing is clear and indeed builds conceptually on Lanczos' presentation. I enjoyed it enormously and suspect you would, too.
Thanks for the recomendation. I actually got the Lanczos after reading the first chapter of the Coopersmith. I am progressing slowly through the latter, and indeed I am enjoying it!
